University of Kentucky issued the following announcement on Dec. 6

WUKY is teaming up with God’s Pantry Food Bank to fight hunger and provide take-home backpacks for food insecure children in Fayette County this holiday season.

WUKY, the University of Kentucky's acclaimed NPR station, in partnership with Stewart Perry of State Farm Insurance, Anita Britton of Britton-Johnson Law, Mr. Sparkle Car Wash and UK Federal Credit Union, will fill a backpack for a child in need through God’s Pantry Food Bank’s Backpack Program with every donation made to WUKY until Dec. 31. These generous sponsors will fill up to 2,000 backpacks for at-risk children with the support of WUKY listeners.

According to Feeding America’s Mapping the Meal Gap, 10,490 food insecure children live in Lexington alone.

God’s Pantry Food Bank distributes up to 860 bags of food weekly. Each bag contains seven to 10 kid-friendly items of food such as a protein-rich main dish (macaroni and cheese or chicken and rice), shelf-stable milk, fruit cups, granola bars and other items chosen by a registered dietitian.

WUKY, is a community-supported service of the University of Kentucky, provides high-quality news, cultural and entertainment content through the use of existing and emerging media to create a more informed and engaged community.

The University of Kentucky is increasingly the first choice for students, faculty and staff to pursue their passions and their professional goals. In the last two years, Forbes has named UK among the best employers for diversity, and INSIGHT into Diversity recognized us as a Diversity Champion three years running. UK is ranked among the top 30 campuses in the nation for LGBTQ* inclusion and safety. UK has been judged a “Great College to Work for" two years in a row, and UK is among only 22 universities in the country on Forbes' list of "America's Best Employers."  We are ranked among the top 10 percent of public institutions for research expenditures — a tangible symbol of our breadth and depth as a university focused on discovery that changes lives and communities. And our patients know and appreciate the fact that UK HealthCare has been named the state’s top hospital for four straight years. Accolades and honors are great. But they are more important for what they represent: the idea that creating a community of belonging and commitment to excellence is how we honor our mission to be not simply the University of Kentucky, but the University for Kentucky.
